John Entwisle was at the centre of Timperley Hockey Club in the 1970s and 80s. Together with his wife Paula and brother Neil, (both of whom have passed in recent years) the Entwisle family were synonymous with the club. John was fully invested in the club and whatever the task, he’d be there to lend a hand.
John joined Timperley HC in the 1960's and played through until the early 1990’s. Like many of his generation John met his future wife Paula when she joined the club in the mid 1960’s and they went on to marry and have two children – Richard and Catherine, both of whom also played for the club.
John made a major contribution to hockey at Timperley both on and off the pitch and was a Hockey Vice President of Timperley Sports Club. He captained the Men's 1st XI 1973 - 1976 (3 seasons) in the era before league hockey and led the 1st XI to their biggest triumph for many years winning the Cheshire Cup in the 1975-76 season, when this was the premier local competition. John played alongside brother Neil and the Wood brothers John and Nigel during the period.
In 1980/81 season John again led the 1st XI as captain, and he also showed his commitment and leadership to the club and hockey by captaining the 2nd XI in seasons 1982 - 1984. Stepping up to provide the leadership all teams need didn't stop there and John then took on the reigns as Men's 3rd XI captain for a further three seasons, 1986 - 89. Nine seasons as a captain for THC and making a major contribution to hockey at the Club led to John being elected a Hockey Vice President of Timperley Sports Club.
With his brother Neil, the Wood brothers and fellow Timperley tourists John loved a hockey tour and was a regular at the Easter Llandudno Festival in the 1960's / 70's.
John was also a great supporter of Cheshire Hockey Association and manager the Under 21's and through his various involvement and support of county hockey was a Vice President of CHA and enjoyed good old catch up and lunch with David Alcock, CHA President last year after meeting again at the Club.
In the late 1990's and early 2000's John was a huge support to his beloved Paula who was Men’s Hockey First XI Manager between 1998 and 2004 and of course as Dad to Richard and Catherine as they followed in the family footsteps of playing hockey for Timperley. Those years are remembered so fondly by the family and players as Paula, managed, John officiated, Richard played and student Catherine travelled back from Sheffield to complete the full Entwisle team as Physio - #hockeyfamily at its best!
In more recent years John had been a supportive Grandad down at the Club when he could be seen at junior training when the next generation of Entwisles have picked up a stick, as well as popping down to cast an eye over the Men's 1s performance and most importantly joining the old boys lunches.
John had fought cancer for a number of years and will now be at peace with Paula and sadly missed by former fellow team mates over three decades and friends at the Club and across the wider Cheshire hockey family.
Our heartfelt condolences go to John's daughter Catherine, son Richard and his beloved grandchildren and the wider family and friends.
The funeral will be held at Altrincham Crematorium on Friday 7th February at 15.15pm. Please wear any colour you wish, from bright to black, as we celebrate Dad’s life. Food and Drinks at the club afterwards. All are welcome please come and celebrate the life of a great man.
There will be a minutes silence before all the hockey matches this weekend 1st / 2nd February and John's family will be our match day sponsor.
